In
November 1991, fifty sailors representing twenty-one Hunter
sailboats met and unanimously voted to form a Hunter Sailing
Club. The purpose of the club was to promote fun, cruising,
racing, education, kinship and resources among Hunter owners.
The club was named Gulf Hunter Sailing Association.
By the first formal meeting in January 1992, which was then
held at the Clearwater Yacht Club, there were thirty-six member
boats. The first slate of officers were established, a monthly
meeting schedule was set, a newsletter editor was selected
and the rest, as they say, is history.
From those early beginnings membership grew rapidly and the
club has remained strong and active through monthly meetings
and cruises to local anchorages and marinas. Education is
provided monthly by club members and local experts on topics
such as boat maintenance, safety procedures and man overboard
drills, sail trim, boat handling and general seamanship and
racing rules. There is also an informative news letter and
race activities, the height of which is the annual Hunter
Cup Regatta.
Since late 1994 the monthly club meetings have been held
at the Coast Guard Auxiliary building next to the Gulfport
Municipal Marina. The meetings are held the fourth Friday
of every month starting at 7:00 pm.
